How To Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth The Healthy Way
I am always up for helping anyone and everyone achieve their goals. Yesterday I posted a question on my Facebook Page that went like,
“What sort of information would you be interested in learning about when it comes to training at home, in the garage, or in a non traditional gym? It can be anything from nutrition information to training info or even life questions !
I want to help answer any questions you have!!”
A guy I talk to frequently on there responded:
Him: I always up for nutritional advice.. It’s what I struggle with the most…
Me: No problem man, what are your questions?
Him: Well, I’m ashamed to say I love sweet stuff.. So I’m wondering what some alternatives would be that would satisfy my sugar fix without all the calories.. Also do you keep track of carb and protein intake and if so how? Thanks..
1. The Cheat Meal
I went on to assure him that everyone, not just him, deals with the frustration of our “Sweet Tooth.” I definitely deal with it all the time. It used to be a big problem of mine until I found the power of having a schedule cheat meal. This would satisfy my “junk food” cravings and I would be set to go the rest of the week. I plan a cheat meal once a week, usually on Sunday’s.
Now, notice that I didn’t say cheat “day” , I said cheat “meal.” The difference is crucial. You need to schedule one meal, enjoy it, don’t over engorge, and then the rest of the day you have to be on track with your normal healthy meal schedule. You don’t want to sabotage your whole week of eating clean by eating like crap all day. Trust me, don’t do it.
I know that isn’t answering his question directly, but it is certainly one way of going about satisfying that sweet tooth.
Another way to go about this is (referring to another blog post) is to do some research on healthy, protein packed desserts. These certainly taste sweet, but definitely do not have all of the sugar involved that a lot of junk food does.
2. Protein Packed, Delicious Recipes
I thought I could give you guys a couple recipes that are protein PACKED and delicious!
- Chocolate peanut butter protein bars!
- 3 cups of old fashioned oats
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup of low fat milk
- 4 scoops of chocolate protein powder
- 1 tablespoon of stevia
- Combine all in a bowl and then evenly lay it out on a baking sheet, then refrigerate it
- It has 8 servings with 250 calories per serving and 20 g of protein!
- Protein Milk Shake
- 1 cup of low fat milk
- 1/2cup of low fat frozen yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 scoop of whey protein powder
Place ingredients in a blender and blend until it is smooth and creamy
259 calories in it and 25 g protein!!!
If you noticed in the first recipe, I included an ingredient “stevia.” Stevia is an awesome sugar alternative and gives food the sweetness you want, but without all of the side effects of sugar. I highly recommend that you go out and buy stevia. DO NOT get splenda, it is an unhealthy sweetener, and Im not going to get into the details about it in this post, but go out and get stevia to give your food the sweetness you want.
3. Reasons You Might Be Craving Junk
There are some reasons that you might be craving junk in the first place. First, your body might be so used to being fed with junk food that it craves the food itself. A lot of bad food and sugary beverages have ingredients within them that will make you want more and more of it, and if you give in to the addictive ingredients, then you will keep eating the bad food and this will lead to BAD things down the road. It is a funny thing, your body craves the type of foods you eat most often, and just like eating junk food, if you eat healthy food all the time, you will find that your body will start to crave that instead of the junk you were feeding it before.
Another reason you might be craving junk is because your body could be deficient in vital nutrients and vitamins. If you are not eating proper food (veggies, meat, fruit, etc.) it is likely that your body is not receiving the nutrients it needs, and you will find yourself craving junk food as a result, its strange how it works really. Now, if you are the kind of person who has a tough time getting ALL of your nutrients through the food you eat, you should look for alternatives. These could be:
- Vitamins (Multi, B-complex, C, D-3)
- Fish oil
- Protein Powder
- SuperFood Powder
- The SuperFood Powder provides you with ALL of your daily servings of fruits and veggies with one scoop. I get the chocolate flavor and mix it in with my protein shake, I can barely taste it as a result. Give it a try!
So in short, make sure you are eating clean, healthy foods and supplement those foods with: Vitamins, Fish Oil, Protein powder and SuperFood Powder. If you do that, you will soon find that your Junk Food cravings will be minimized!
My ultimate recommendations are for you to incorporate weekly cheat meals to help you get rid of cravings. Also, you should use the above recipes (and search for more while you are at it) to have delicious and healthy meals that can match the sweetness of most junk food, but have MUCH more health benefits. And then lastly, make sure that your diet consists of mainly clean and healthy food, and that you are supplementing that food with key nutrients and vitamins that your body needs to function correctly.
If you follow this advice, you will be taking a HUGE step forward in your journey of life long health and happiness.
